Japan has always been on my bucket list of places to travel to and I had the chance to go in Feb - incredible would be an understatement of how the trip was. It was great travelling around different cities with my camera, and although it wasn't quite sakura season, it was still a great trip - 10000% I'll be back one day.
A Series of Cylinders
Red is obviously the main idea here, I like how it's subtly blurred in the foreground but also shows with differing levels of light intensity on the gates behind.
A Stroll Through the Torii Gates
I stood here waiting for ages for someone to walk through and this guy was the perfect subject after a while. This is the first photo in my Japan series on Insta cos I wanted it to be of the iconic Torii gates.
Classic Kyoto Tourist Photo
This is like a classic tourist photo in the Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto. You run ahead to try and not get anyone else in the frame, and for this random guy I captured him as the main character in the moment. Pretty neat.
Framed by the Flowers
Love how the two ladies are framed between the branches and flowers but are still in focus, and how the shot captures how they were admiring the sakura in the moment.
Ghost of Tsushima Vibes
My aim here was to capture the reflections and where the redness stood out the most against the background. We came across this lake on the walk up the Fushimi Inari Shrine and it had this incredible reflection in it.
Kyoto's Main Character
I really like the framing and colours in this photo, it's one of my favourites from my Japan trip. If you're ever in Kyoto, you should 100% visit the Fushimi Inari Shrine.
Oh "Deer", an Apocalypse
I like this photo a lot cos it seems like that's what the area would look like if there was an apocalypse and only the deer remained among man-made things lol.
Rainy Koi Pond
As it was a rainy day in Kyoto, I really wanted to capture the raindrops in the water and the ripples it created, turned out pretty well I think
Ryokan Pipe Stream
Caught this stream in motion on a particularly rainy day in Kyoto, I figured it'd look great as a header
Sake Galore
I love how each of the stacked barrels have their own unique design, and it stands out really well in the light. I really like how the shadows come off as diagonal but don't take too much of the designs away.
Slice of Life in Japan
Simple shot on a rainy day in a Kyoto neighbourhood but I like how the yellow bike matches the yellow rails in the background, and both pop out against the buildings.
Sneaky Frame
I waited for like 5 mins for someone to walk through the gate so I could frame them in this fence, think it turned out pretty well.
Someone'll Walk Past Eventually
There's a lot of patience required in street photography - sometimes you'll come across a really cool frame (like the two pillars) in great lighting, but no one will walk past to fill the frame. Thankfully this guy walked through after a while though.
Shadowy Torii
I quite like how the redness of the gates don't show as much here, because it draws attention to the subject walking through them, and in a way he kind of blends in with them.
Surf's Up
There's a lot of open space in this photo, but it all centres around the surfer. It's a simple shot but it kind of makes you appreciate the textures in the water more.
The Biscuit Thief
Side profile goes so hard in this photo, it's almost as if the deer knew to strike a pose lol
The Corridor of Torii
Sometimes when taking a photo, taking a little step to the side to have something in the foreground really elevates the immersiveness of the photo. I really like how it feels like you're peeking around a corner and seeing an endless corridor of gates.
The Red Remains
I really like how the gate in the light is framed by the darkened torii gates, it makes the colour pop out so much.
The Water Temple
Absolutely insane reflection shot of the temple, I really like how the colours were retained in the reflection and still pop out.
Torii Inception
Framed a torii gate within a torii gate, is this the start of Inception's sequel? Your move, Nolan.
We've Got Torii At Home
The red really stands out against the surrounding scenery here, it makes the torii gate seem really grand and pop out more.
Where's the Lamb Sauce
I really like how the lighting turned out here. The foreground is quite dark so it pulls your attention to the stall and the guy in the background. This is one of my favourite shots from Tokyo.
